Choosing Your First CNC: Desktop vs. Benchtop

The first real decision in CNC isn't which brand — it's which class of machine. Desktop and benchtop CNC routers/mills look similar in photos and differ enormously in what they can actually cut, how repeatably, and for how long.
Desktop CNC: prototyping and light material
Desktop machines (typically under 2 sq ft of work area, spindles in the 200-800W range) are built for wood, soft plastics, PCBs, and light aluminum passes. They're the right call if you're prototyping parts, cutting signage, or running a hobby/small-business shop where uptime pressure is low.
- Lower rigidity — expect chatter on harder materials or aggressive feed rates
- Lower spindle torque — fine for engraving and light milling, not heavy stock removal
- Smaller footprint, lower power draw, easier to run in a garage or classroom
Benchtop CNC: production and harder materials
Benchtop mills step up in rigidity, spindle power (often 1-3kW), and work envelope. They hold tolerance better under repeated cuts and can handle aluminum, brass, and harder plastics as a matter of course rather than an edge case.
- Higher upfront cost and power requirements (often needs 220V)
- Meaningfully better repeatability for production runs
- Better suited to a two-person shop running the same job dozens of times
How to decide
Ask what you're actually cutting and how often. One-off prototypes in soft material: desktop. Repeat production runs in aluminum or harder stock: benchtop. If you're not sure yet, email us what you're building and we'll tell you straight which class fits.
