Diode vs. CO2 Lasers: What's Right for Your Shop

Laser class is the first spec that matters, but material compatibility is what actually decides which laser you need.
Diode lasers
Diode lasers (typically 5-40W optical) are compact, affordable, and good at engraving and cutting thin wood, leather, paper, and some plastics. They're the entry point for makerspaces, classrooms, and small shops doing signage or light product work.
- Lower cost, smaller footprint, easier to power
- Cannot reliably cut acrylic (diode wavelength doesn't absorb well) or thicker material
- Slower cut speed on anything beyond a few millimeters thick
CO2 lasers
CO2 lasers (commonly 40-150W in this class) cut and engrave a much wider material range at real speed — acrylic, thicker wood, textiles, rubber, and more — and are the standard for production signage, awards, and small-batch manufacturing.
- Higher upfront and operating cost (tube replacement, cooling, ventilation requirements)
- Meaningfully faster and cleaner cuts on acrylic and thicker stock
- Requires more serious ventilation and safety setup — always check your laser class rating and enclosure requirements
How to decide
If your work is engraving and thin material, a diode laser is the better dollar-for-dollar choice. If acrylic, thicker wood, or production speed matters, a CO2 system pays for itself. Tell us your materials and typical job size and we'll point you at the right class.
